Someone Is Grieving. What Do You Say?
June 2nd, 2010
When someone you know experiences a loss, you want to help. But it’s difficult to know what to say. Often we find ourselves avoiding the person, or fumbling about awkwardly. On June 3, Words That Work will ask Mandy Atkission, Executive Director of Trauma Intervention Programs of San Diego County, what to say, and maybe more importantly, what not to say to someone who is mourning. Mandy will share key phrases which are particularly unhelpful, but commonly used, and teach us some phrases that soothe. She’ll also explain how to be helpful without overstepping boundaries.
Improve the Way You and Your Partner Resolve Conflict
June 2nd, 2010
The way a couple resolves conflict impacts the quality of their relationship. Dr. Doug Kyle, lead pastor of Green Valley Church, councils couples in many aspects of their relationships. He says that aside from shared spirituality, communication is the single most important factor in the success of a relationship. Communication, when used effectively, can solve a litany of other issues. On the first Words That Work television program, Pastor Kyle will share 3 common issues couples face, and how to overcome them. He’ll explain what to do when one person is a confronter and the other is an avoider. He’ll also teach us how to depersonalize an argument so that we can work as a team with our partner. Last, he’ll explain how arguments become polarized and increasingly dramatic, and he’ll give us the antidote.
